For good value in Champagne, it's wise to look out for small family producers. This is a lovely rich style from a House founded in 1951 by Henry Nicolo. That was in the Côte des Bar, where they are still centred - in the south of Champagne, with vineyards on south-facing slopes, and chalk, marl and limestone soils. Third-generation David Nicolo is at the helm today and had the foresight to take another Côte des Bar family estate, Champagne Camille Paradis, into the fold in 2013.
