Originally a priory for benedictine monks, Château Prieuré-Lichine has had many owners - the most important of which is the late Alexis Lichine. A renowned wine writer, he played a major role in promoting varietal labelling of wine, especially in the United States. He bought the estate in 1951, and at the time it was just 11 hectares of neglected vines. But he had a vision of producing a Margaux wine well beyond its classification of a Fourth Growth. Through extensive vineyard replanting and expanding along with investment in the winery, he made massive improvements to the château's winemaking capabilities. His hard work paid off - it's now a celebrated estate with wines that promise incredible value for money. This is the château's second wine, sourced from younger vines from a diverse patchwork of unique plots. It's harvested, vinified and aged with the same care and attention as the estate's top wine, resulting in typical Margaux elegance - for less. A dominant Merlot blend, it's round and silky with jammy raspberry and blackberry flavours. Mature notes of leather, baking spices and toast make it an ideal pairing for roasted meats.
