Both Dr John and his wife Dr Brigid Forrest started their careers in science - the latter studying neurophysiology and molecular biology, while Brigid trained as a GP. In the late 1980s, they decided to start a pioneer winery in Marlborough. Their first ever vintage was in 1990 - a Merlot rosé, which "accidentally" won a Trophy.
