Description
On its fourth release, Telmo Rodriguez's Yjar has built up a cult following as one of the region's most exciting Riojas. The grapes come from a plot within a 'Grand Cru' triangle of Labastida, San Vicente and Peñacerrada. Here are some of the oldest goblet-trained high-altitude vineyards (600-800m altitude) in the sub region of Rioja Alavesa. The result is a wine of remarkable freshness, elegance and balance, with polished tannins. James Suckling awarded it 98 points, describing it as "Transparent, pure and stony! Pristine and understated, yet complex and persistent". It's a blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha, grown together in the vineyard and co-fermented in open-top oak vats and aged in barrel for 30 months. Very fine and ageworthy.
