Description
Master of Wine Tim Atkin wrote, "Encierra makes some of the hidden jewels of Colchagua Valley", awarding one Carmenère 96 points, and 93 points to the Family Reserve. The estate was founded six generations ago in Colchagua by the Eyzaguirre Echenique family, the same family who set up Los Vascos nearby in 1975, which is now a joint venture with Domaines Barons de Rothschild. This is a rich, voluptuous red - a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with portions of Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Carmenère - planted on the lower mountain slopes. Ageing in French oak barrels adds complexity and velvety smoothness. It's a big wine, lovely to drink now, but that'll benefit from opening early and decanting. Ideal with steak or a warming casserole.
